Black Tickle
The community of Black Tickle is located on the Island of Ponds in a cove called Salmon Bight. On the other side of the community if Domino. Both communities share resources such as medical, schooling and airport.
Black Tickle was founded in the mid nineteenth century by a group of British seamen who had jumped ship. In 1865 Captain Hood reported on the population and fishing catches from Battle Harbour to Red Bay Island in Labrador and one of the largest establishments of that time was Black Tickle. Today the community is still dependent upon the fishery as its primary source of employment but, instead of cod, the current resource is snow crab. These two communities have no road connection to the outside and are therefore dependent upon coastal boats during the summer and year round air service. The 2001 census shows a population of 229 but that has been decreasing over the years. With the downturn in the crab fishery in recent years, the residents of Black Tickle/ Domino have many challenges ranging from stable employment to a decent water supply but they are a very determined group who want to see their community survive like so many other rural areas in the province today. The residents of Black Tickle/ Domino continue to lobby for a road connection as well as water and sewer services.
