Charlottetown is a small community on the southeast coast of Labrador and was settled in 1950 by Mr. Ben Powell Sr. and Mr. Clarence Perry. It was originally founded for the purpose of a logging operation, however, the majority of people depend on the fishery for their livelihood.
During the summer months Charlottetown became a ghost town with families moving to summer fishing villages nearby. After 1951, the settlement grew rapidly. A community clinic, all grades school, general store, post office, hotel, community roads and an airstrip were constructed to meet the needs of this new settlement. The construction of the airport in 1986 connected Charlottetown with the rest of the world. Over the years, the residents of Charlottetown became known for their dedication, commitment and hard work. Several community infrastructure projects were a result of the many volunteer hours contributed by the members of this community. Charlottetown became a thriving, self sustaining, well- established community whose economy was solely based on the cod fishery. The collapse of the cod fishery in 1991 and the follow-up announcement of a cod moratorium served a devastating blow to the residents of Charlottetown; 85 % of Charlottetown's population had lost their livelihood. With the fishery being the only way of life known to the people here, many fisheries now tried diversifying into harvesting of an underutilized species such as crab and scallops. Although these species are no longer underutilized, they have proven to be worthwhile ventures for many fishers to this day.
